We introduce you to our latest member of the team, Sarah. Sarah has joined our team as one of our Client Account Managers. Sarah has been out and about recently meeting with clients, attending networking events and even 2 expos! She has had a great response from many of our clients here at The Unite Group.

We recently had a chat with Sarah to find out a bit more about her and her role…

Growing up, what did you want to be?

I wanted to be an engineer. I was the first girl in our secondary school to do technology as an option. Initially, being the only female was a bit daunting. But I soon learned how to handle myself! My first project at 14 years old was designing an alarm system for the whole school. For various reasons, I went into optics when I left school and later became a registered ophthalmic dispensing optician. My love of technology has played a part in my career.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

My role at The Unite Group as a Client Account Manager is to develop strong trusting relationships with both existing and new clients. A vital part of this is listening being empathetic, proactive, authentic, and trustworthy.

I was looking for a new opportunity that really involved making a difference every day. A former colleague of mine was chatting with Paul (one of the directors). He mentioned that he was looking to expand the team, so she recommended me. I met Paul and Dean for a casual chat, and the rest, as they say, is history. After just 30 minutes, I knew that this was a company I wanted to be a part of. I loved their integrity, openness, honesty, culture, and banter from that first chat.

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

My typical day starts with checking emails and messages. Then, catch up with the team and follow up on client projects and issues. Most days, I will have a couple of client meetings, do some research into new solutions and then finish off with any admin for the day. Every day is different, and sometimes you get something unexpected pop up which adds to the mix – in a good way!

What is your most and least favourite part of the job?

My favourite part is that I love working with my clients to help them achieve the best solution that fits their business requirements; no two companies are the same, and the individuality of each account motivates me. Having clients from varied sectors means there is always something new to learn and share.

My least favourite going through my email inbox after a holiday; you just never know what you will find!

What is your greatest achievement?

One of my proudest achievements is being a top 10 finalist in the British Franchising Awards in 2009. It was out of 35,000 national franchisees. I was interviewed by a panel of six at HSBC headquarters in Canary Wharf, one of which was the late Sir Bernard Ingham; it was incredibly daunting but exhilarating all at the same time. Whilst I didn’t win, it was such a privilege to have made it to the final. This was a result of my exceptional client retention and my innovative technology-based solution that significantly streamlined and enhanced my business.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

On a professional level, I’d love to have more responsibility within the company and expand my knowledge base; I’m fascinated by AI and how it can develop in a commercial setting.

Personally, I’d like to have a traditional cottage with land to grow all my fruit and veg and a little pop-up restaurant that would feed my love of cooking for people on an ad hoc basis.

How do you unwind outside of work?

I love cooking, and I’m halfway through writing my 5th recipe book – so lots of creative cooking happens in our house! Cooking and recipe creation my happy place!  Beyond that, we love walking our dogs on the beautiful Northumberland beaches where we live.

We introduce you to our latest member of the team, Cassandra. Cassandra has joined our sales team as one of our Customer Account Managers. She has fit into the team perfectly and has had a great response from many of our clients here at The Unite Group.

We recently had a chat with Cassandra to find out a bit more about her and her role…

Growing up, what did you want to be?

From studying Art and Design at college at the age of 18, I was always interested in creative hobbies and liked to sketch and doodle and had a good imagination with storytelling. I always dreamt about going into animation and working with creative people. The role I have landed in is slightly different to this, however, I am excited to see where this role takes me.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

My role with The Unite Group as a Client Account Manager is to develop relationships with existing and new clients. Provide high levels of customer service by reviewing their needs and understanding their business. Organising my own diary and face-to-face engagement. Promoting up-to-date information, advice, and guidance on all the company’s services and products. Sourcing new opportunities through networking and attending group memberships to raise the company’s profile.

I was looking for a new opportunity after recently being made redundant and was approached by The Unite Group after meeting and building a relationship with some of the team. I feel like I have finally found the right role for me and really excited for the future.

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

My typical day at The Unite Group usually starts off with a team update, then planning the week ahead with appointments, making calls and sending emails, updating company systems, visiting clients, attending networking events, and updating social media with posts. No two days are the same and that’s what I love about my role!

What is your most and least favorite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is meeting and talking to people as I find people very interesting. I love being able to help people and make an impact and learning new skills.

My least favourite is all the admin involved and all the systems to remember.

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement has got to be becoming a mother and raising my daughter into a caring thoughtful and polite young lady.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Within the next ten years, I want to travel around the world and experience new things to push myself out of my comfort zone. I also want to be successful in my job and live life to the full!

How do you unwind outside of work?

Outside of work, I like to keep fit by attending gym classes and going on long walks. I also enjoy socialising with friends. As well as going to music festivals.

We introduce you to our latest team member, Morgan. Morgan joined our team last month with previous experience as a support desk engineer. He has fitted into the team perfectly and recently lead a team representing The Unite Group at the Grace House Golf Day.

We recently had a chat with Morgan to find out a bit more about him and his role…

Growing up, what did you want to be?

Growing up, I always wanted to be a footballer or a journalist reporting on sports. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out but I had a keen interest in IT which is how I landed my first role in the industry.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

My role at The Unite Group is as a Helpdesk Engineer. In my role, I work with the helpdesk team to resolve any technical issues our customers may face. This is perfect to best utilise my skillset as I have worked in technical support for over 5 years. Following my studies of IT at both GCSE & A-Level. I recently was offered the opportunity to join The Unite Group and I am enjoying my time here so far!

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

A typical day in my role involves me working on multiple tickets from our clients with specific issues. Which I then investigate thoroughly in order to find the best possible solution to make sure the client is satisfied. This entails contacting our clients and working with them to ensure that their technology works to their specific needs.

What is your most and least favorite part of the job?

My favorite part of the job has got to be working with the helpdesk team to find solutions to each client’s specific issue. It’s a great feeling to be able to go back to a client and let them know we’ve resolved their issues promptly. Limiting the effect it has on their role.

My least favorite part of the job is when Social+ asks me to participate in a TikTok and I haven’t had a haircut!

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement has got to be being a TikTok celebrity on the Social + account. Myself, Jack H & Jack P have been taking part in a few lately and we’re sure it’ll not be long before we’re going viral!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years’ time, I see myself hopefully living in the Maldives retired after winning the EuroMillions. If that fails, I hope to progress within the industry and continue to grow my technical knowledge.

How do you unwind outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy playing sports such as football and golf on the regular. I recently joined Paul on the Grace House Golf Day leading a team for The Unite Group. It was a great day and we raised lots for the charity! I look forward to hopefully attending more golf days for The Unite Group in the future.

In this blog, we introduce you to Nic. Nic is one of our Project Engineers here at The Unite Group. Nic is the newest member of our team, having been with us for a little over a month. Nic spends a lot of his time out of the office, on our customer sites. Continue reading to learn more about Nic and his role here at The Unite Group.

Growing up, what did you want to be?

Growing up I always wanted to be a commercial pilot for an airline.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

My role here at The Unite Group is a Project Engineer. I have worked for a few companies since starting my career, first as a Service Desk Analyst before progressing to 2nd Line Support and then most recently I worked as an Operations Engineer for a SaaS company before going travelling through Asia for the latter half of 2022.

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

So far during my time at The Unite Group, my days have varied a lot. Between working on projects in the office such as building new servers. As well as, remotely supporting customers with issues. I also have been getting out on site to onboard new customers and deliver projects. So it’s fair to say no two days have been the same since I started at The Unite Group just over a month ago.

What is your most and least favourite part of the job?

This is a tricky one to answer! Since I have been here just over a month, I will reserve judgement for now 🤐

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement is actually still pending. But I have been working towards my private pilot’s license over the past couple of years. I will hopefully be completing it this summer. When this happens it will definitely be my biggest achievement!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

The best piece of advice I have been given is to take pride in what you do and try your best! I think this has helped me progress throughout my career.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

I have not yet fully decided what I want to specialise in. However, I do know that I would like to be working in the cloud space, potentially either in Platform Engineering or as a Solutions Architect. So in 10 years’ time, I picture myself working in one of those areas.

How do you unwind outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy going karting regularly with a friend. Also, more recently I have taken up hiking. I have climbed some local hills in Northumberland and Yorkshire. Moreover, since I enjoy travelling and visiting new places in general I have also been learning Spanish in my free time to help me on future adventures.

Nic has fit into our team here at The Unite Group perfectly and has really hit the ground running. He is an asset to the projects team and we look forward to seeing him progress within his role with us.

If you would like to learn more about how Nic and The Unite Group can help you with your business technology needs, contact us on, 0191 466 1050.

Carl is our newest member of our team here at The Unite Group. Having joined us just before Christmas. Carl has joined us on an apprenticeship. He will work closely alongside Chris, our helpdesk manager as well as the other helpdesk engineers.

We recently had a chat with Carl to find out a bit more about him as well as his role at The Unite Group…

Growing up, what did you want to be?

Growing up I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be. I thought I wanted to make video games but wasn’t sure if that was the industry I wanted to be a part of.

I went to college and university where I studied game-making. By the end of it, I decided that wasn’t the career for me. I then looked into apprenticeships and this seemed a good path for me.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

In November 2022, I applied for an apprenticeship with The Unite Group. From there I was lucky enough to start my role on the 6th December. My role is here a helpdesk apprentice. This entails talking to customers and helping them with any technical problems they may encounter. From there creating tickets and fixing issues that arise remotely.

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

With being on an apprenticeship scheme I have specific modules to work through. So currently my time is balanced between completing this work, training with some of the team on newer aspects of my role as well as taking calls from customers. Offering them support with any problems they have or escalating them on to the team.

What is your most and least favorite part of the job?

It’s hard to say at the moment with being so new in the role I am just finding my feet. I think as I build in confidence I will be able to work out the areas I enjoy the most. But it is always great to be able to resolve an issue a customer calls up with.

What is your greatest achievement?

When I was younger, I was a part of the cadets. During this time I took part in the coast-to-coast bike ride. This challenge starts in Whitehaven and finishes in Tynemouth. It took 3 days to complete but was a huge accomplishment. Therefore, this is something I am still very proud of.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

The best piece of advice that I have been given was from my late grandfather, to make your life easier try to look at the positives of everything.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Within the next 10 years, I hope I will have worked my way up the ladder in the IT industry. This apprenticeship is just the start of my career in IT.

Outside of work, I would also really like to learn to drive. As well as this, within the next 10 years I hope to also own my own house.

How do you unwind outside of work?

When outside of work I like to unwind by playing games. I also enjoy watching movies and TV shows. Alongside this, I practice Kendo once a week.

jack - helpdesk engineer

In continuation of our Meet The Team blog series, we introduce you to Jack. Jack is one of our Helpdesk Engineers here at The Unite Group. Jack is the newest member of our team having started with us just a few weeks ago. He has settled in great and we can’t wait for our customers to get to know him a bit better!

We recently had a chat with Jack to find out a bit more about him and the role he will be undertaking here at The Unite Group…

Growing up, what did you want to be?

It’s a little unorthodox, but I wanted to move to Scotland when I was 16, be a footballer during the day and work in a Kebab shop during the night. I think the footballer hope is long gone, but I still might end up making Kebab wraps on the Bigg Market one day.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

My role is as a Helpdesk Engineer. This means I mainly work alongside Chris & Jack Hutchinson. I ended up where I am now due to always having an interest in IT. As well as having the willingness to learn about the many different aspects of IT.

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

I think like everyone has said previously there isn’t really a ‘typical’ day in the office here at The Unite Group. Each day brings new challenges and obstacles to overcome which always keeps you on your toes.

What is your most and least favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is definitely being able to help users resolve issues and being able to interact and communicate with them while resolving their issues. It’s always nice to have a little chat with new people.

I’d say my least favourite part of the job is Lidl being next door! I’ve already started eating too much from the bakery and it’s not looking good for my waistline…

What is your greatest achievement?

I would say my greatest achievement to date is learning to be myself and getting over my fear of meeting new people. This has allowed me to make new friends and fit into new environments much easier.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

The best piece of advice I have been given is to set lots of small achievable goals rather than setting one huge goal that is lightyears away. I think this helps to keep me motivated by seeing achievements along the way.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years’ time, in an ideal world, I’d like to be on a beach in the Maldives. Realistically, I’d hope to be further advanced in my career. I’d also like to hopefully have a house and just be happy with life really.

How do you unwind outside of work?

I usually either play football or go to the gym. I also really enjoy going out for different types of food or going to the cinema. Unfortunately, I have a partner who is a picky eater and hates the cinema so I usually just eat at restaurants that I’m told to and watch movies at home…

We recently had a chat with him to find out a bit more about the role he plays here at The Unite Group and what you can expect from a typical day in Paul’s life…

Growing up, what did you want to be?

Growing up, I wanted to be a professional footballer or a golfer! Ability unfortunately got in the way of either becoming a reality!! I have always had an interest in technology so I guess my 3rd choice has turned out ok! Still practicing the golf as much as possible you never know might make the senior tour yet!!

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

My role here at The Unite Group is the Sales Director. I have worked in technology since leaving school but really enjoy meeting new and current customers and developing our ongoing strategy with the marketing team. So I guess I have the perfect job!

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

In one word a typical day here at The Unite Group is busy! There is always a buzz in the office. We are very lucky to have a great hardworking team who are always customer focused and give 100%. This makes the busy days so much easier!

I also run the FORE biz Newcastle group so I am lucky enough that golf is part of my working day every few weeks. It’s great to network with such a good group of business owners and FORE biz opens opportunities nationwide.

What is your most and least favourite part of the job?

My favorite part of the job is always providing a solution that I know will make a difference to our customers. It’s very rewarding to be able to efficiently and cost-efficiently fix the problems customers have sometimes been facing for years.

My least favourite part of the job however has got to be paperwork of any kind!

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement has got to be that I once made two holes in one at golf in a 2 week period! I have not been even close to getting another one since!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Believe in yourself and be confident, everyone has self-doubts and it’s normal to feel that way.

This has been very relevant over the last 13 years as there have been times myself & Callum have had to take big leaps to grow The Unite Group and without self-belief, it would have never worked!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years’ time, I see myself hopefully winding down a little and traveling to some of the places on my wish list. I would love to try and see as much of the world as possible with my wife Lorraine.

How do you unwind outside of work?

It’s well known I like a round of golf or two!! So outside of work, you will often find me on the golf course. I am a member at Backworth however I love to visit other courses too as often as possible.

Growing up, what did you want to be?

Growing up, I always wanted to be a soldier. I spent 4 years in the South African Defense Force as an operational medic. I thoroughly enjoyed serving my country, and I am very proud of this.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

My role here at The Unite Group is a Systems Administrator, it’s a new role but I have worked in IT for almost 30 years now.

I started in sales at an IT retailer after leaving the military. From there I quickly progressed to completing my MCSE on Windows NT, and joined Siemens as a network administrator. I then worked in Saudi Arabia for ARAMCO oil company supporting their knowledge management system. Thereafter, I worked in Botswana for their largest mining contractor as their general manager. We mined Nicol 24/7 and we also built asphalt roads for the government. Back in 2018, I emigrated from South Africa to the United Kingdom with my wife and son.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the United Kingdom, and I am overjoyed to be working with such a brilliant team here at The Unite Group. I also enjoy working with people, and I enjoy working in a team. As a team, we are always on hand to jump on and help one another when needed! I also take great pride in providing solutions to make our customers’ lives easier.

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

My typical day is busy and we always start off with a laugh and a cup of coffee. My main role is to work closely with Mike and Dean on researching and planning projects for our customers. Alongside this, I offer tech support and help wherever I can. I am also working on some very interesting projects, and I want to see our customers pleased with the outstanding service we offer.

What is your most and least favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job has got to be working with people, supplying solutions to customers, and keeping my brain active. I can’t say I have any negatives. I always try to be positive about everything in life.

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement is stopping smoking cigarettes after 35 years, stopping alcohol, and losing 50 pounds by going back to the gym 6 days a week. I am fit now and have never felt better in my life. This has helped tremendously with focusing, and just being accepted into The Unite Group is a massive achievement.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

The greatest piece of advice I have ever been given is to “never burn your bridges”.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years time, I see myself as a success contributing to the success of this company and my team. I want The Unite Group to be successful, and I want to be part of that.

How do you unwind outside of work?

Outside of work, I like to go fishing, you can often find me at some of our beautiful locations like Derwent Reservoir. Also, I enjoy exploring, and being new to the North East there are so many wonderful places to explore, I have not even seen a fraction of them.

Dean, our Sales & Finance director.

Following on in our meet the team series, we introduce you to Dean. Dean is one of our Sales and Finance Directors here at The Unite Group. He mostly focuses on the finance side of the business.

Growing up, what did you want to be?

When I was young, my dream job was to join the Royal Airforce and become a Royal Airforce Pilot. Pilots need to be able to make quick decisions based on reasoning. A skill which I suppose is serving me well in my current role.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

I am one of the directors within the Unite Group I deal with IT, sales and Finances.  From previous roles, I have gained experience both in sales roles and technical roles. So, technical sales just make sense.  I love working with numbers and data and so taking on the role of managing the group’s finances is purely because I enjoy it. My role means I work closely with Lorraine on a lot of projects.

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

There is no typical day for me. There are so many things that I deal with on a day-to-day basis. Some days I can be working on sales quotes and completing the onboarding of a new client. On other days I can be right in the middle of a technical job. There are days when I just deal with the data and numbers.  There are days when I can be doing all of these jobs within one day. I just do whatever needs to be done at any given time.

What is your most and least favourite part of the Sales & Finance directors job?

Currently, the least favourite part of my job is dealing with supply chain issues. Due to various issues over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a global shortage of materials needed to manufacture devices we typically supply to our customers.

What is your greatest achievement?

Aside from being a part of building a business group to be proud of, my 3 children are my greatest achievement in life.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Don’t be the cheapest, be the best instead. To me, this is ensuring that customers get value for the money they pay. It’s about being customer focused and realizing that there is no point in being the most expensive or the cheapest in the business if what you are providing isn’t worth it.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Doing what I’m doing now, hopefully in a larger capacity as the group grows.

How do you unwind outside of work?

I have 3 kids, varied in ages and interests. I enjoy spending time with them but there is no unwinding.  I’m not even sure what that word means. However, on extremely rare occasions when I am not working or running around after kids, I do enjoy gaming.

Continuing on with introducing you to the team that make up The Unite Group. Next up we introduce Rob. We recently had a chat with Rob about his role…

Growing up, what did you want to be?

I always knew I would work in something Technology related, my family on my fathers side have been engineers or similar going back at least five generations. For about a decade I thought I would likely work in the AV field, and did a fair amount of work doing lighting or sound, starting at a youth theatre, and continuing into working in bars and clubs.

What is your role at The Unite Group and how did you end up where you are now?

At The Unite Group I am a Senior Service Engineer. In my role, I mostly work on projects. I started with Unite as an Apprentice, shadowing another engineer for a bit, and then working on the Helpdesk. Since then as the company has grown I have completed various qualifications to get to my role within the company.

What does a typical day look like at The Unite Group?

Most days start with checking the health of a few services that I manage. I’ll run though any alerts that have been generated overnight, I’ll then create support tickets for anything that requires further looking into. I also run a few health tests on demo networks that we have at the office.

From there I then move onto emails. After which it really changes on a day to day basis. I mostly work on projects and installs now. So off to client sites for installs, or planning work.

What is your most and least favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job has got to be the process of taking apart and re-building a system to trace down a particular fault. I’ll normally do this when there is an actual ongoing issue that needs resolved, but this can also be done when we’re onboarding a new client with limited documentation, to make sure that we can fully understand any issues that might come up.

My least favourite part of my job would be all the paperwork around the jobs. When I worked at the NHS many years ago, one of the medical leads often said “midwife means with wife, not with computer” and I can now relate.

What is your greatest achievement?

I’m very happy how I left a small theatre I volunteered at. When I started, the entire society had a budget of around £300, and about 5 working lights. It was always a fun challenge to get a production on with what we had available.

Over the next 4 years myself, and a new committee managed to improve the situation somewhat. I took over as head of the technical side of the theatre, and managed to build up that side of things, training up new technicians, and managing shows on a weekly basis.

By the time I left the society had working lights, sound system, and a budget plan for fixes and replacement going out for a decade.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

If you can’t explain it you don’t understand it. I always try to understand something well enough to be able to explain it simply to someone else. Often this is reduced to explain to a five year old, which while entertaining may take quite a long time.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years time, I can see my role getting a bit more specialised within The Unite Group. I’ve already started working on some more niche things and I hope to grow into more of these. One of the areas I am currently expanding my knowledge into is Cyber Essentials. I am looking forward to seeing where this takes my role within The Unite Group. As well as what opportunities it will offer to our customers to protect their organisations further against possible cyber attacks.

How do you unwind outside of work?

When left to my own devices there is nothing nicer than a glass of whisky and a good book.
